Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaiʻi’s largest locally owned and operated medical and clinical testing laboratory. With over 50 Patient Service Centers, we are proud to provide quality services throughout Hawaiʻi, Guam and Saipan! Thanks to the support of our community, Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc., is the largest locally owned clinical testing laboratory in Hawaii. We are proud to be part of the communities we serve, and we work hard to serve you and our community. Opportunity Description:

Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc (DLS) is able to provide Diagnostic Pathway CTE teachers insight and training for the following: 

  • Specimen collection training for foundations class
    • Pre-analytical specimen collection, handling and transportation 
    • Chemistry behind the agar media selection (why we chose the media we do and why it's important)
    • Hands on experience for teachers on inoculating media & streaking agar plates 
    • Overview of analytical & post analytical processes (what happens after the specimen collection & processing) 
  • Phlebotomy best practices
    • Test & Tubes: which vacuatiner to draw per test and number of inversions
    • Order of draw
    • Standard of conduct: nine steps of phlebotomy
    • Safety first: use of equipment & safety devices
    • Appropriate draw sites and sites to avoid 
    • Labeling of specimens
    • How to achieve a quality sample (includes proper transportation of sample)  
  • Tour of the medical laboratory 

 Requirements: 

  • availability fills up fast: make requests at least 2 months in advance
  • minimum of 5 teachers/ Maximum of 10
  • able to train at Halawa laboratory location
